We are pleased to share that the City of Wauwatosa has received a $280,000 planning grant to update our ADA Transition Plan. This funding allows us to carefully review our public spaces and plan long-term improvements for residents and visitors of all abilities.
What is an ADA Transition Plan?
Think of an ADA Transition Plan as our long-term plans for accessibility. It helps us identify physical barriers in public areas (like curb ramps, sidewalks, or signals) and guides how we improve them over time.
The Funding and Next Steps
The federal funding is from the Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Wauwatosa is one of seven communities in Wisconsin to receive the funds. See a listing of all communities across the nation that received the grant funds.
Wauwatosa will consider next steps, such as hiring a planning partner to help with making updates to the plan. This planning process will take several months because it may include public engagement and assessing curb ramps, sidewalks, crossings, transit access points, and Accessible Pedestrian Signal systems citywide and synthesizing results to prioritize future safety and accessibility investments.
These federal grants are highly competitive, but our team actively pursues them because they allow us to complete important community projects without placing the entire financial burden on local taxpayers.
